Goddard explained that the local planners had asked his group to create a “heart” for the center of Shenfu New Town. The Ring of Life was built at a place where a river, two lakes, and the city’s midpoint converged. It was meant to be a permanent reminder of how nature and man-made structures can exist in harmony and balance.

The ring was completed in 2012. It stands about 515 feet (157 m) tall and weighs about 3,000 tons (2,722 mt). Around 12,000 LED lights dot its surface, lighting up the ring at night in different colors. Four elevators within the ring can transport visitors to an observation deck at the top.
